Equipment

  • Large Heavy Pot
  • Chopping board
  • Sharp knife
  • Mixing bowl
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Measuring Jug

Ingredients

  • Beef Mince 500 g
  • Large Onions 2
  • Medium Carrots 3
  • Beef Stock 600 ML
  • Worcestershire Sauce 1 Tbsp
  • Dried Thyme 1 Tsp
  • Self-raising Flour 250 g
  • Atora Suet 125 g
  • Salt 1 Pinch
  • Cold Water 150 ML

Instructions

  • Place your heavy pot on the stove over medium heat. Add the beef mince to the hot dry pot. Stir it often until the meat turns brown.
  • Add the chopped onions and carrots to the meat. Cook them for five minutes until they start softening. This builds a great flavor base for your stew.
  • Pour the beef stock and Worcestershire sauce into the pot. Stir in the dried herbs and some black pepper. Bring the liquid to a gentle boil.
  • Turn the heat down to low and cover the pot. Let the mince simmer slowly for twenty minutes. This makes the beef very tender and flavorful.
  • Mix the flour and suet in a bowl with water. Roll the dough into eight small, round balls. These will become your fluffy, delicious dumplings.
  • Place the dough balls on top of the mince. Put the lid back on the pot tightly. Cook for another twenty minutes without lifting the lid.

Notes

  • Use cold water when making the dumpling dough.
  • Do not overwork the dough or dumplings get hard.
  • Brown the mince well to get a dark gravy.
  • Keep the lid closed while the dumplings steam.
  • Check the pot to ensure it does not dry out.
  • Dice carrots small so they cook at the same rate.
  • Add a pinch of salt to the dumpling mix.
