Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Chef's knife
  • Cutting Board
  • Measuring Cups
  • Electric Hand Mixer
  • Large mixing bowl

Ingredients

  • Large Yellow Onions 2
  • Unsalted Butter 2 Tbsp
  • Vegetable Oil 1 Tbsp
  • Cayenne Pepper 1/4 Tsp
  • Kosher Salt 1 Tsp
  • Black Pepper 1/2 Tsp
  • Cream Cheese 4 Oz
  • Sour Cream 1/2 Cup
  • Mayonnaise 1/2 Cup

Instructions

  • Slice your onions into thin half-moons. Heat the butter and oil in the skillet. Use medium heat for the best results.
  • Add the onions to the hot pan. Sprinkle in the salt and cayenne pepper. Stir them to coat every single piece.
  • Cook the onions for thirty minutes. Stir them every few minutes carefully. Watch them turn a deep gold color.
  • Remove the pan from the heat. Let the onions cool down completely. This prevents the cream base from melting.
  • Place the cream cheese in a bowl. Add the sour cream and mayonnaise now. Use the mixer to make it smooth.
  • Fold the cooled onions into the mixture. Stir gently with your wooden spoon. Add a little extra pepper if desired.
  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Put it in the fridge for hours. This lets the flavors marry together well.

Notes

  • Cook the onions slowly on medium-low heat.
  • Always use room temperature cream cheese for blending.
  • Chill the dip for at least four hours.
  • Do not rush the onion browning process.
  • Use fresh onions for the best natural sugar.
  • Taste the dip before serving to check salt.
  • Stir the onions often to prevent dark burning.
