- Large Granny Smith Apples 6
- Lemon Juice 1 Tbsp
- Granulated Sugar 1/2 Cup
- Ground Cinnamon 1 Tsp
- All-purpose Flour 1 Cup
- Light Brown Sugar 1/2 Cup
- Unsalted Butter 1/2 Cup
- Salt 1/4 Tsp
Peel and core all your fresh apples. Slice them into thin, even wedges. Place them into your large mixing bowl.
Add the lemon juice and white sugar. Sprinkle in half of the ground cinnamon. Toss everything together until the apples shine.
Butter your 9-inch square baking dish well. Pour the apple mixture into the dish. Spread them out so the layer is flat.
In a separate bowl, combine flour and sugars. Add the remaining cinnamon and the pinch of salt. Whisk these dry ingredients together gently.
Cut the cold butter into small cubes. Add the butter cubes to the flour mixture. Use your pastry cutter to mix them.
Stop mixing when you see pea-sized crumbs. Do not let the butter melt. The mixture should look like coarse sand.
Sprinkle the topping over the apple layer. Cover every corner of the baking dish. Do not press the topping down hard.
Place the dish in a preheated oven. Bake at 375 degrees for fifty minutes. The top should be a golden brown.
- Use very cold butter for a crunchier topping.
- Slice apples thinly so they soften completely.
- Choose tart apples to balance the sweet sugar.
- Do not overmix the flour and butter mixture.
- Let the crumble sit for ten minutes before serving.
