Wash your fresh broccoli under cold water. Cut the heads into small, even pieces. Small pieces cook much faster and better. Place them on a clean towel.
Fill your large pot with one inch of water. Place it on the stove over high heat. Bring the water to a steady boil. You will see plenty of steam rising
Place the steamer basket inside the pot. Make sure the water does not touch it. This keeps the broccoli from getting soggy. Proper steaming is the key to texture.
Add the broccoli florets to the basket carefully. Cover the pot with a tight lid. Steam them for five to seven minutes. Keep the lid on to trap heat.
Poke a floret with a kitchen fork. It should feel tender but still firm. Do not overcook the green vegetables today. They should stay a bright green color.
Melt the butter in a small bowl. Whisk in the garlic, salt, and pepper. Add the fresh lemon juice to mix. Stir it until everything is well combined.
Place the hot broccoli in a bowl. Pour the garlic butter sauce over top. Toss gently to coat every single piece. Serve it while it is hot.
